Banh Xeo (Vietnamese crepe cake), which is one of delicious Vietnamese Dish, are served wrapped in mustard leaf, lettuce leaves or rice paper, and stuffed with mint leaves, basil, fish leaf and/or other herbs, and dipped in a sweet and sour diluted fish sauce. In the Central region, the pancake is also dipped in a special sauce, which consists of fermented soybean and sticky rice sauce, ground pork liver, ground and toasted peanut and seasonings.
Banh Xeo (Vietnamese crepe cake) must use with Vietnamese dipping fish sauce (nuoc cham), and assemble the lettuce, herbs, fish sauce, in bowls or on plates. Decorating with the fresh herbs, wrap it all in lettuce, dip and enjoy.
For long time, Banh Xeo Ba Duong (Mrs Duong’s pancakes) has become a “brand name” for customers when traveling to Da Nang. Although each dish of Banh Xeo costs up to 55,000 VND which is higher than other places, the restauarnt is still crowded. Yellow pancakes can be served with vegetables, sour green papaya and cucumber. For 30 years, the restaurant of Mrs. Duong Family has still remained delicious and rustic taste of the Central region.
The owner is Mrs. Truong Thi Lai, 77 years old. She opened this shop more than 30 years ago. She said, the main ingredient used to make the cake is a special kind of rice in Quang Nam province called “Gao Xiec”. The rice is added a little turmeric powder to have eye-catching color and soaked for four hours to be soft and smooth. When being fried on the stove, the piece of cake will be plastic and crunchy.
The attraction of Banh Xeo Ba Duong
To have delicious pancakes, the chef has to use high temperature to warm up the pan, and then put the ingredients including the bean sprouts, beef and shrimp inside. Until the cake is well done, double it and put the cake into a plate. The special feature of the Mrs Duong’s pancakes is egg wrapped around the cake, which creates a special flavor when the customers enjoy the cake.
The hot cake is served on a dish, cut into pieces for easy to roll, next to the plate of raw vegetables, sour paprika and cucumber. It is rolled with thin rice paper. Pancakes here are famous for the cup of dipping sauce which is mixed with the own formula of Mrs Duong.
Most of the staff serving in the restaurant are descendants in the family. Although the number is raised to more than 30 people, it is not enough to serve the crowds in the evening. The restaurant is opened from 9am to 10p.m but sometimes closed at 8p.m because of the large number of customers. The diners should come here before 5 pm to avoid any inconvenience of waiting or sitting with other customers.
In addition to pancakes, you can order vermicelli barbecue (Bun thit nuong) at the price of 25,000VND/a bowl and grilled beef at the price of 80,000VND/a dish. The restaurant also has Nem lui which are enjoyed by many foreign tourists. Nem lui is made of pureed pork, wrapped around bamboo chopsticks and then grilled through charcoal at the price of 5000VND/stick.
